Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musical family on 9 August 1963 in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel star Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and the cousin of singer Dionne Warwick. As a young girl, Houston began singing professionally at the church of New Hope Baptist of Newark along with her mother in Chaka K's Im Every Woman in 1978. The film, and her performance as a character was not appreciated, however, the music and her interpretation of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You charted for several months at the top of the charts. In all, she sold over 44 million singles and albums worldwide. The same year that she welcomed her daughter Bobbi Brown, she got married to Bobby Brown of the ex-New Edition group.
